This exhibition is devoted to paintings by Françoise Sullivan. Although it covers 35 years of an abundant pictorial production, the exhibition sheds a special light on works produced in the past five years. A few works from the artist’s mythical series such as Tondos and Hommages, will forego the passive role and act as the guides that they are within her current production. Certain paintings from Proportio, her most recent series, have never been shown, while the works from Jeux, the previous series, have been reassembled from a number of private collections.
This is not a retrospective of this worthy exponent of the Automatist approach. The challenge endures “to produce paintings that owe no dependence and that stand solely on their own internal strength, because, in the end, painting is, above all else, immanence, presence, aura.”
